How can we teach our daughters independency in a world rife with social, cultural and religious control? With ever-changing boarders and the influx of immigration – the integration debate has taken centre stage. Two conflicting cultures can often leave, young women especially, leading a double life. Lack of communication between family members can often be the catalyst for this cauldron of emotions to erupt from. So what would you say to your future daughter to guide her through this turmoil? Khaterah Parwani urges her generation of parents to have the hard conversations and to accept and encourage the young women of this world to seek out their own identity and be able to find happiness in the life they have chosen. Khaterah Parwani is dedicating her career to fighting for civil rights and helping victims of physical violence, social control, bullying and radicalism. Khaterah’s work revolves around disrupting mechanisms of social control and cultural radicalisation in minority societies, by focusing not only the victim, but also the oppressor. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
